Circalit is the first ever dedicated social networking site for screenwriters. Though a few other sites allow users to read and discuss their screenplays, Circalit is the first site to incorporate the next generation of social networking features, a comprehensive review and ratings system that allows you to break down your feedback into different categories, and the ability to selectively control who you want to share your screenplay with. Unlike the previous generation of social networking sites, Circalit is simple and intuitive and designed specifically for a single purpose - to empower screenwriters to take control over the way their screenplays are marketed.

The mission of Circalit is to digitalise, democratise and revolutionize the way screenplays are sold by writers to producers and agents.

Rhizome

05/08/2009 - 09:19

Rhizome is an online platform for the global new media art community. Their programs support the creation, presentation, discussion and preservation of contemporary art that uses new technologies in significant ways. Mailing lists serve as a forum for the exchange of opportunities and resources, and also for new media art - related discussion and critical debate. Rhizome online publications cover the new media art field, and include original writing by artists, critics, curators and journalists.

Launched in November 2001, the Rhizome Commissions Program makes financial support available to artists for the creation of innovative new media artwork via panel - awarded commissions. Requests for proposals (RFPs) will change from year to year to reflect new developments in technology and the current cultural environment.

Founded in 1999, the ArtBase is an online archive of new media art including some 1,600 projects. Encompassing software art, websites, performance and websites by artists from around the world, the ArtBase is the largest and most diverse archive of its kind, and features artist statements and biographies along with each entry. The TextBase contains the discussion and critical writing that has passed through Rhizome's mailing lists which were both founded in 1996.

The organization takes its name from the botanical term for an underground stem that connects plants into living networks, a metaphor for the organization's non-hierarchical structure.

Beyond the PhD

13/04/2009 - 10:49

Beyond the PhD is a career resource tailored specifically for arts and humanities PhD researchers. This web resource, which is freely accessible, offers a rare opportunity to listen in on the experiences of people who have been through the PhD in an arts and humanities discipline and made the transition into a variety of work beyond it. Their candid personal reflections on facing challenges, responding to opportunities and reaching decisions are captured in almost 300 audio clips.

In addition to biographical interviews, this site also features articles by those with a personal or professional interest in the career development of PhD researchers. For example, how can we interpret the statistical data pertaining to the career destinations of arts and humanities PhDs? And do employers outside academia perceive PhD researchers in the arts and humanities as being over-educated but under-qualified? And, if so, how can this perception be challenged?

There are also video clips of small group discussions about similar issues from a professional perspective. In the first group, careers advisers discuss the nature of career guidance and what PhD researchers might expect to gain from it; the range of work that arts and humanities postgraduates are drawn into; and how the PhD thesis can be reframed, and the postgraduate experience translated, in applications for non-academic jobs.

Beyond the PhD is a good place to explore possible career paths within and outside academia, but it aims to complement rather than replace the existing support for PhD researchers. It brings together audio interviews, video discussions and articles aimed at making visible what happens to postgraduate researchers after they graduate.

A select list of related online and print resources is available via our links page.

PR Couture

02/04/2009 - 08:57

PR Couture is a respected online resource for successful, emerging and aspiring fashion publicists, designers, students, and educators to share tips, tricks, challenges, and commentary about the role of public relations in the fashion industry.

Launched in December 2006, PR Couture quickly evolved into an industry must-read: a true insiders' guide to the realities of the job. Featuring real-life examples of the power of smart, strategic PR, we tackle everything from how to self-promote as a designer to which courses and programs are best for students looking at fashion PR as a future career. Engaging interviews with successful fashion PR practitioners, fashion PR agency news, and insider tips from fashion editors and industry pioneers provides relevant, inspiring and authentic content.

PR Couture was created in response to the lack of a credible, honest, and engaging forum about fashion public relations online. PR Couture believes that by sharing ideas and engaging in relevant debate, we enhance our skills, and increase the value of community within our chosen field. They are also said to be tired of the stereotype that fashion publicists are more concerned with air-kisses than credibility. PR Couture aligns itself with the PRSA mission to unify, strengthen and advance the profession of public relations and believes that by providing a forum for the fashion public relations specialty online, we are in service of those goals.

Although the website is based in America (meaning that the jobs advertised are in the US), the information and insider blogs and tips can be useful to potential workers within fashion PR in Britain.

Demos

11/03/2009 - 13:47

Demos is the think tank for everyday democracy. We believe everyone should be able to make personal choices in their daily lives that contribute to the common good. Our aim is to put this democratic idea into practice by working with organisations in ways that make them more effective and legitimate.
What we work on
We focus on six areas: public services; science and technology; cities and public space; people and communities; arts and culture; and global security.
Who we work with
Our partners include policy-makers, companies, public service providers and social entrepreneurs. Demos is not linked to any party but we work with politicians across political divides. Our international network which extends across eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, Brazil, India and China provides a global perspective and enables us to work across borders.

How we work

Demos knows the importance of learning from experience. We test and improve our ideas in practice by working with people who can make change happen. Our collaborative approach means that our partners share in the creation and ownership of new ideas.

What we offer

We analyse social and political change, which we connect to innovation and learning in organisations. We help our partners show thought leadership and respond to emerging policy challenges.

How we communicate
As an independent voice, we can create debates that lead to real change. We use the media, public events, workshops and publications to communicate our ideas. All our books can be downloaded free.

DCMS Money Map

11/03/2009 - 13:41

This 'money map' attempts to list funding schemes that might be open to creative businesses. It also lists the funding schemes that are exclusive to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and the English regions.

At the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, we know from talking to creative businesses that raising finance can be a problem. This is because most high street banks tend to perceive them - unfairly - as a "high risk", possibly because they rely on intellectual property rather than fixed tangible assets. But there are alternatives to the traditional debt finance offered by the Banks.

We aim to update this site regularly and welcome your feedback and details of other funding schemes you may be aware of. We hope you will find it of use and will recommend it to your contacts.
