Die Tonight
It is a strange moment when you are listening to bouncy electro-pop and then realise the lyrics are about impending death. Defend Moscow create a really good sound, with one foot firmly planted in '80s electro-pop, but still with an accompanying youthful edge, achieved with bouncy pace and skillful measures of techno beats. But then there's the lyrics. "Well we know we're gonna die, say goodbye, don't even try, 'cause no-one's getting out alive". Exploring morbid ideas of death with bouncy electro-pop? The two just seem like chalk and cheese.
The B-side captures their sound much more successfully, with great harmonies and melodramatic choruses, hand-in-hand with synthesised guitars and pianos. Individually, there are times when the lead vocalists' singing sounds a bit diluted amidst all the synthesisers and drum beats, but in the choruses of 'Die Tonight' and 'Sign of Life' you can't help but get sucked in, and after a couple of listens you'll at least be fighting the urge to bop along.
Overall, this is a promising second single, especially with the B-side, and the accompanying remixes of 'Die Tonight', which brings the sound a bit more up to date and ready for the club scene.
