Why We Make Art and Why it is Taught
Richard Hickman writes with a clarity that comes from a comprehensive control of the sprawling debates surrounding 'Art' and art-making. This study focuses on overarching questions; "Are artists born or made? What is the drive to produce artworks? Does art education facilitate or deny artistic development?" while providing illuminating detail from individual accounts and the author's experience both as a practising artist and senior lecturer in education. Hickman takes issue with the "weighting towards a kind of literate understanding rather than creating" in art education. Ironically, this book offers a literate understanding of art practice which is a credit to its author. "Why We Make Art and Why it is Taught" not only clarifies the current provision and its shortfalls but provides insight into a handful of unique personalities negotiating their way through education and practice.
