In The Reins

The first of what will hopefully become a series of collaborations between the two, ‘In The Reins' highlights just how incredible both sets of musicians are. Taking Sam Beams stripped down acoustic songs, Calexico employ their unique brand of Americana to give a fuller sound that ends up sounding like it's actually their songs that are being sung over as opposed to them fleshing out the songs given to them. The opener ‘He Lays In The Reins' is probably the best track here, a gorgeous waltz that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Only 2 tracks aren't up to par with the rest. ‘A History Of Lovers' & ‘Red Dust' the latter sounding a little to similar to ‘Freedom Hangs Like Heaven' off Iron & Wines ‘Woman King'.
